VOLUNTEERING AT THE IRGLM
Sectors of activity
Sectors of activity
Activities to which volunteers contribute are numerous. There's something for everyone!
Welcoming new patients
Provide a guided tour of the Institut to recently admitted patients and their families. This activity is designed to familiarize them with the facility as well as to reassure, inform and promote their integration into various treatment programs. Considering the training required for this activity, the minimum commitment period is one year.
Companion for medical appointments
Accompany a patient with a medical appointment at another hospital. Transportation is provided by the Institut, the volunteer does not have to look after this aspect of the activity. More than a mere escort, this activity provides the volunteer with a special moment with a patient when a sympathetic ear can make a difference.
Animation
Help the recreation technicians organize and lead the various activities to facilitate in-patient participation. Activities are varied and numerous: sports, introduction to computers, parlour games, arts and crafts, themed events, meet and greet café, movies, etc.
Library cart
Book lending service provided for patients.
Gift shop
Sale of gift items and toiletries. The shop caters to patients as well as visitors and employees.
CRIDÉAT (Regional Centre for information, demonstration and evaluation of technical aids) and Computer access workshop
Assist occupational therapists through various tasks related to these sectors of activity. People with a good knowledge of computers can, for example, be required to install new software and test it, experiment with peripherals, etc. The volunteer must be able to explore, understand and explain the use of software.
Assist with meals
Help patients who need assistance at mealtime. The presence of volunteers shifts the focus to the social aspect of the activity.
L’Arc-en-ciel newspaper
L’Arc-en-ciel, a periodical written by volunteers, is published 5 times every year. It allows volunteers to get to know each other better, to highlight their contributions to the IRGLM and to advertise the various services they offer patients.
Manicure/massage
Provide a bit of relaxation to patients by giving them a manicure or a massage (limited to the two arms). No need to be an expert, we provide the training. All you need is the capacity to listen and be comfortable with the “art of touch”. Considering the training required, a commitment of at least 6 months is required.
Pastoral
Assist the chaplain in his pastoral activities.
Magazines
Distribute magazines on the care units and in the waiting rooms of the Institut.
Students in training
Within the framework of non-clinical training, psychology or medical students visiting with patients with brain or spinal cord injuries (brain trauma or stroke). These volunteers are specially trained and under the joint supervision of a psychologist or neuro-psychologist and the psycho-educator.
Office work
Help with mailing activities, compile statistics, make phone calls, perform accounting tasks, help out at the Documentation centre, etc.
Video library
Work in the patient's video lending library.
➢ Occasional activities
Shopping
Accompany patients to the Wilderton shopping centre or make purchases for them.
Fund-raising activities
Help with the organization and staging of various fund-raising activities.
Translation services
Provide simultaneous translation services during treatments or during meetings with the patients.
Support to speech therapists
Mainly for speech therapy students to help them acquire hands-on experience in a hospital setting.
Friendship visits
Referred by a clinician, a volunteer may be matched with a patient who needs a specific presence.
